About Me

What I write on this blog

I am a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based journalistic blogger and all-around full-hearted writer. I'm taking a cue from Toni Morrison these days and writing what I want to read.

At the moment, this includes blog and non-blog short fiction, poetry, and occasional music and book reviews. And blog posts, lots of blog posts.

A word on my credentials

I earned a bachelor of arts in journalism, with a minor in English literature, at Cornerstone University, graduating summa cum laude in 2009.

I have eight years' blogging experience and a lifetime of writing experience.

My college work included staff positions on The Herald student newspaper, as staff reporter, copy editor, page designer, features editor, assistant editor and editor. I also helped restart a dormant student newspaper at Montcalm Community College in 2005-06, and then became a copy editor, reporter, secretary, assistant to the adviser and assistant to the editor.

My first adult job during and after college was as a copy editor and page designer at The Grand Rapids Press, a position I held for six years and eight months throughout the changes of the journalism industry in Michigan and the merging of copy desks statewide. In 2012, the company rebranded itself as MLive Media Group and merged eight newspapers into one operation.

I left MLive voluntarily in December 2014, thereafter did freelance work, then took a writing and editing position at Calvin College for just less than a year. I currently work as a reporter for Grand Rapids Business Journal.
